An article in the Washington Post today reports on some of the circumstances surrounding Dede Scozzafava's withdrawal from the race, and her subsequent endorsement of Democrat Bill Owens. According to the article, as soon as she withdrew, the White House began orchestrating events to coerce her endorsement. Immediately she heard from Bill Owens, who offered her his sympathy. She heard from others such as the Chairwoman of the NY State Democratic Party June O'Neill, NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, and Senator Schumer. Even former President Bill Clinton tried to reach her. Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel assigned the task to his political director, Patrick Gaspard. After meeting with democrats (and telling Cuomo, "You're probably the next governor"), she caved in and endorsed Bill Owens, apparently making the decision to do so while singing "I went down in the river to pray" with her church choir. Scozzafava warned, "If they [conservative Republicans] down't want us with them, we're going to work against them."
